Dear friends and supporters,
this is an update on my dream to establish a new world record after my failed attempt in Finland earlier in the year. You will recall that I broke the record in training but on the day of the attempt became entangled in the camera cables and had to abort my dream.
This setback plunged me into a battle with my depression and addiction. I have emerged renewed but it was an uphill struggle.
Fortune has smiled on my efforts.
An introduction to Arve Gravingen in Norway asking him whether he would consider managing new record attempt met with an enthusiastic response. Arve is the Headmaster of the Lerberg School for children who suffer from mental disorders, addictions and home difficulties. He also has a free-diving school.
I visited Norway and am happy that my new attempt will be well managed. Arve is prepared to undertake the attempt at cost seeing it as a personal challenge. Furthermore while there I was introduced to free-dive photographer, Alexander Nordahl , who will do the photography for free as a documentary story for his newspaper Dagbladet.
Thanks to this incredible support from Norway the budget for the new attempt in February 2020 was just Euro 5,000 [ R 85,000 ].
I was hopeful that Cipla would renew their sponsorship but they preferred to confine themselves to broad support for mental disorders rather than one individual. However, as luck would have it, I shared on social media the video that Cipla produced using me to promote their campaign and this produced a sponsor for the new attempt.
My heartfelt thanks go to Rustenberg Old Girls, who on seeing the video, identified with my struggles and have generously agreed to fund my attempt which they say is to be seen as promoting “ the power of women “.
Whether I am successful or not, after February I will keep going with my campaign to fight depression and addiction through motivational speaking, assisting charities, teaching swimming or any other opportunities that might present themselves.
I will be training in SA until 27th January, then to Berlin for cold water acclimatisation until I go to Norway on the 23rd February ahead of the attempt on the 29th February. You will be able to follow my progress on social media.
Please keep you fingers crossed for the 29th that I might “ leap “ into the record books.
Thanks again for everything.
